A chatbot follows a script: menus, keywords and replies written in advance. An AI chatbot understands free text and writes its own answers, but mostly just talks. An AI agent, often sold as an "AI employee", also acts: it checks your real prices and stock, takes orders, books appointments and hands hard cases to a person.
What is a chatbot?
A classic chatbot is a decision tree. It shows a menu ("1 for prices, 2 for delivery"), matches keywords, and sends replies someone wrote in advance. If a customer types something the tree did not expect, it answers "Sorry, I didn't understand" or passes them to a person.
That is not always bad. Rule-based bots are predictable, cheap and easy to check. They work well for a short list of fixed questions, such as opening hours or a tracking link. They break down when customers write the way people really write: a voice note, a photo of a product, a question in dialect, or two questions in one message.
What is an AI chatbot?
An AI chatbot puts a large language model behind the chat window. It reads free text, copes with spelling mistakes and mixed languages, and writes a fresh reply each time instead of picking one from a list.
Its weak point is that a general AI model does not know your shop. If nobody gives it your price list and policies, it may answer with something that sounds right but is not, such as an old price or a delivery promise you never made. An AI chatbot is mainly a better talker. It answers, but it usually cannot do anything with the answer.
What is an AI agent, and what does "AI employee" mean?
An AI agent is an AI model connected to tools and data so it can act, not only reply. In customer service that means it can look up your catalogue, check an order's status in your system, draft an order and record it, add a booking to your calendar, save the customer as a lead, and decide when a person should take over.
"AI employee" is the same idea described in job terms. You give it a role (sales, support, receptionist), a tone, the knowledge it may use, rules it must follow and a teammate to hand problems to. Yusr is built this way: you set up an AI employee with a role, an Arabic dialect, your files and catalogue, guardrails and hand-over rules, and it answers on channels such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
The practical test is simple. After the conversation, did something happen in your business (an order, a booking, a qualified lead, a chat passed to a teammate), or did the customer only get text?
Chatbot vs AI chatbot vs AI agent: how do they compare?
The labels blur in practice. Many products called chatbots now use AI, and some called agents can do very little. Judge a tool by what it does, using the rows below.
| Rule-based chatbot | AI chatbot | AI agent / AI employee | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it understands | Menus and keywords | Free text in many languages | Free text, and in better tools voice notes, photos and files |
| Where answers come from | Replies written in advance | The model, plus any documents you add | Your knowledge base, catalogue and systems |
| Can it take actions? | Only steps built into the flow | Rarely | Yes: orders, bookings, lookups, lead capture |
| Off-script questions | Fails or hands over | Answers, sometimes wrongly | Answers from your data or hands over |
| Setup work | Build every path by hand | Write instructions, add files | Add knowledge, connect tools, set rules |
| Main risk | Customers stuck in menus | Confident wrong answers | Wrong actions if limits are not set |
| Best for | A few fixed questions | General questions and answers | Sales and support that need your real data |
Which one does a small shop need?
Look at what customers asked you last week. If most messages are the same five questions and a link answers them, a simple rule-based bot or WhatsApp Business quick replies may be enough.
If customers ask about specific products, prices, sizes and stock, send voice notes, and want to order inside the chat, you need something that reads your catalogue and can record an order. That is agent territory. The same goes for messages that arrive at night, in more than one language, or across several apps.
- Mostly fixed questions and low volume: a rule-based bot or quick replies.
- Many different questions, but no ordering in the chat: an AI chatbot that answers only from your documents.
- Questions that lead to orders, bookings or follow-up: an AI agent with a clear hand-over to your team.
How do you stop an AI agent from making mistakes?
An agent that can act needs tighter limits than one that only talks. Look for these controls in any product you consider:
Yusr follows this list: totals are calculated from the catalogue, an order is recorded only after the customer says yes, and anyone on the team can pause the AI and take over a chat. Whatever you use, test it with your ten hardest real questions before you switch it on.
- Prices and stock come from your catalogue, not from the model's memory.
- Orders are read back to the customer and recorded only after they confirm.
- Written guardrails, such as no invented prices, no promises you cannot keep and no talk about competitors.
- Hand-over rules in plain words ("refund requests go to Sara"), with a summary for the person who takes over.
- A test chat before going live, and a way for your team to pause the AI on any conversation.
What should I ask before buying a chatbot or AI agent?
These questions show what you are really getting, whatever the product is called:
- Where do prices come from: my catalogue, or the AI?
- Can it take an order or a booking, and what happens before it is recorded?
- Does it understand voice notes, photos and my customers' dialect?
- How does it hand a chat to my team, and can we pause it?
- What exactly am I billed for: messages, conversations, seats or AI usage?
- Which channels does it cover, and do any of them charge their own fees?
Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT an AI agent for customer service?
On its own, ChatGPT is a general AI assistant. It does not know your prices or stock and is not connected to your WhatsApp or Instagram. A customer service agent is a model like this connected to your channels, your catalogue and rules, and your team.
What is the difference between a chatbot and an AI assistant?
"AI assistant" usually means an AI chatbot: it understands free text and writes its own replies. A classic chatbot follows a fixed script. Neither label tells you whether the tool can take actions, so ask what it can actually do.
Will an AI agent replace my customer service staff?
It takes over the repeated questions: prices, stock, delivery, opening hours and simple orders, at any hour. Complaints, refunds and special requests still need a person. Most shops use both, with the AI handing hard chats to the team with a summary.
Can an AI agent reply in Arabic dialects on WhatsApp?
Good ones can detect the customer's language and reply in it. Yusr, for example, lets you choose the dialect for Arabic replies, such as Gulf, Levantine or Egyptian, and understands voice notes on every plan.
Is an AI agent more expensive than a chatbot?
Usually, because it uses AI on every reply and connects to more systems. Pricing models differ a lot, from per message to per conversation. Yusr has a free plan with 10 conversations a month and paid plans from $49 a month.
