The WhatsApp Business app is a free phone app for one owner or a small team answering by hand. The WhatsApp Business API (Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform) connects your number to software, so a team and an AI assistant can work one number, with records and templates. Start with the app; move when chats get lost.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?
The WhatsApp Business app is an app you install on a phone. A person reads each message and replies. It adds business tools to normal WhatsApp: a business profile, a showcase of your products, greeting and away messages, and quick replies.
The WhatsApp Business API, which Meta now calls the WhatsApp Business Platform, is not an app you open. It connects your number to software. That software can be a shared team inbox, your CRM, or an AI assistant that answers customers at 2 am. Meta describes it as built for messaging at scale with approved templates, automated flows and links to back-end systems.
What can the WhatsApp Business app do?
For a small shop the app is a good start. It is free to download, it takes minutes to set up, and customers see a business profile instead of a personal number.
- Business profile with your description, address and website.
- A showcase of products with prices you can share in a few taps.
- Greeting messages and away messages.
- Quick replies for answers you type often.
- It runs from one phone; you can link a few extra devices, but it is still a person answering by hand.
What does the WhatsApp Business API add?
The API changes who can answer and what gets recorded. Because the number is connected to software rather than one phone, more people and systems can work on it at the same time.
- Answers at any hour, from an AI assistant, without someone awake holding the phone.
- Several teammates on one number, with assignment and notes.
- Every chat, customer and order saved in a place you can search.
- Approved message templates to reach a customer first or after 24 hours.
- Links to your CRM, order system or booking calendar.

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in Saudi Arabia?
As of October 2026, Meta's pricing page says it charges per delivered message. The price depends on the message category (marketing, utility, authentication or service) and on the country code of the customer's number, so a customer with a Saudi number is charged at Saudi rates. Check Meta's current rate card for the exact figures.
When a customer writes to you, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and it resets each time they write again. Inside the window you can send normal replies. Outside it, you can only send approved templates. Each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, which do not roll over; from October 1, 2026, service messages beyond that are charged, and Meta asks businesses to keep a payment method in its Billing Hub. Messages that start from a click-to-WhatsApp ad open a free window that can last up to 7 days.
There is also a limit on reach. New business portfolios can message 250 unique customers outside the service window in a rolling 24 hours. Verifying your business is one of the ways to raise it. On top of Meta's fees you pay for the software you use. Yusr, for example, prices its plans in US dollars and charges in Saudi riyals at a fixed 3.75, with a free plan and paid plans from $49 a month; Meta's own message fees are paid to Meta separately.
Can I keep my number and the app if I move to the API?
Yes, your number stays yours on the official platform. Meta also offers a way to connect an existing WhatsApp Business app number to the API while you keep using the app for one-to-one chats. It runs through a Meta Tech Provider or Solution Partner, and the business can allow up to 180 days of one-to-one chat history to be synced.
It has limits worth knowing: group chats are not synced, some features such as broadcast lists and calls are not supported on the API side, and linked companion devices are unlinked during setup and must be linked again. Ask your provider whether they support this before you start.
Which one does your shop need?
Do not move because the API sounds more professional. Move when the app starts costing you customers. If any of these happen often, not just once, you have outgrown it.
- Orders and questions go unanswered at night or on weekends.
- More than one person answers from the same phone.
- You cannot answer a simple question like how many people asked about a product last month.
- You want an AI assistant to handle the repeated questions.
How do you move from the app to the API without disrupting sales?
Prepare before you switch, then move in small steps. In Yusr, for example, you connect WhatsApp through Meta's official platform or, for low volume, by a QR link that is unofficial, and then test the AI in a private chat before it answers anyone.
- Write your information first: prices, delivery, policies and frequent questions.
- Connect the number and check that messages arrive and are saved.
- In week one, let the AI handle only the repeated questions and read every chat.
- Submit the message templates you will need, such as order updates, for approval.
- Review chats every week and add what was missing.
Questions people ask
Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
No. The app is free to download, but on the platform Meta charges per delivered message by category and country. Each number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and you also pay for the software or provider you use.
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number?
Meta offers a way to connect an existing Business app number to the API while you keep using the app, through a Tech Provider or Solution Partner. Group chats are not synced and some features are not supported on the API side.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp Business API?
Not if you go through a provider. Meta lets businesses onboard through a partner's sign-in with little or no code. You need developers only if you connect directly or link your own systems.
What is the 24-hour window on WhatsApp?
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens and resets each time they write again. Inside it you can send normal replies, not only templates. Outside it you must use an approved template.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp API and a QR connection?
The API is Meta's official, supported platform. A QR connection links an existing number the way WhatsApp Web does; it is unofficial, and WhatsApp may restrict numbers that send heavy volumes this way.
